James Onstad is firmly establishing himself as a versatile performer at opera's leading edge. Originally from Santa Fe, NM, James received an undergraduate degree in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology from Harvard University. He then received his master's degree from College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in Cincinnati, where he performed the roles of Silvio in Bizet's Le Docteur Miracle and Sam in Kurt Weill's Street Scene. Most recently, James has focused on new work. He sang as a wounded soldier in Diane Paulus's critically acclaimed world-premiere of Crossing by Matthew Aucoin. And in August, he premiered the role of Jake in Aucoin's chamber opera, Second Nature, with Chicago Lyric Unlimited. James is committed to broadening opera's relevance and scope, and is thrilled to be a part of Hopscotch.
